We’re all familiar with the sensation of losing our baby teeth because it’s a natural part of our transition from childhood to adulthood. Then, once our permanent teeth grow in we expect them to be permanent structures in our mouths. If you’ve noticed one has become loose or is wiggling, it’s natural to feel concerned. What causes this? How worried should you be? Is it considered a dental emergency?

Continue reading to learn more about why this happens and how your dentist can help!

What Causes Permanent Teeth to Loosen?

If you have an adult tooth that feels less-than-stable, you should call your dentist. There are several potential causes, and you’ll need professional help identifying the problem so it can be fixed. Some reasons this occurs can include:

  • Physical trauma. If you participate in high-contact sports or martial arts, you’re likely to take a blow to the face at some point. If the force is strong enough, it can damage or completely dislodge a tooth.
  • Gum disease. Your gums are the connective tissue that helps hold your teeth in place. If they become infected, they’ll eventually begin to recede. The roots of your teeth will be more exposed, and they’ll lose the essential support they need to remain put.
  • Bruxism. Teeth grinding can put so much additional pressure on your teeth over time that they start to feel slack in their sockets.
  • Pregnancy and menopause. Hormone changes, like higher levels of estrogen and progesterone, can loosen the ligaments and bones in your jaw.
  • Medications and other medical issues. Some medications for certain conditions interfere with the body’s ability to absorb calcium which is necessary to keep your teeth strong and healthy.

Is a Loose Permanent Tooth a Dental Emergency?

Even if you’re not certain whether your situation constitutes an emergency, it’s best to schedule an appointment with your dentist as soon as you notice a loose tooth. There’s a good chance that the underlying cause will only progress and make it worse in time. By visiting them earlier on, they’re able to provide appropriate remedies before more damage is done. For example, they can recontour your gums and clear away any disease before your tooth is lost entirely if they find that’s the issue. The treatment will depend on the reason it happened to begin with and the sooner you’re seen, the faster you’ll receive the right help.

Now that you know more about why your pearly white might be unsteady, you can see how important it is to contact your dentist about it sooner rather than later!
