Woman with food stuck in teethIf you’ve ever had a piece of food stuck between your teeth, it can be an annoyance until it’s removed. You might wait to deal with it until it’s time to brush your teeth or pick at it with your tongue or a toothpick to dislodge it. However, you could cause damage to your teeth and gums. Here are 5 of the worst foods to get caught between your teeth and what you can do to remove them.

1. Meat

Tough, chewy meat can get caught between your back molars. Ribs and steaks are common culprits. Pieces of meat can be large, which can cause pain or discomfort until they are dislodged. They can also break down in your mouth, increasing levels of harmful bacteria.

2. Popcorn

Popcorn is a tasty snack that’s good for your waistline, but it isn’t as beneficial for your smile. Chomping down on a popcorn kernel can lead to a broken tooth and a dental emergency. Pieces of the kernel can also get stuck under your gum tissue. They can be very difficult to remove. If you wait to see if it comes out on its own, it can lead to inflammation and infections.

3. Small Seeds

Small seeds can get trapped between teeth or in your gum tissue. There are reports of tomato seeds growing sprouts when caught in the gums. Although fruits and vegetables are good for your diet, they can wreak havoc on your dental health if they have small seeds and you don’t brush and floss after eating them.

4. Sticky Candy

Sticky candy creates a residue that will cling to your teeth, which contains sugar. Sugar is converted to an acidic plaque that feeds cavity-causing bacteria that can erode enamel. It’s best to choose candy that’s easier to rinse from your teeth, like dark chocolate.

5. Potato Chips

Potato chips contain starch, which contributes to tooth decay. Although chips don’t often get stuck between teeth, they do get trapped in the crevices of your molars. Over time, it can lead to decay in cavity-prone areas.

Commit to Daily Flossing for Healthy Gums

Besides brushing your teeth, commit to flossing every day. Brushing alone can leave up to 40% of your teeth surfaces uncleaned. Flossing removes build-up and food particles your toothbrush can’t reach.

If you get something stuck in your teeth and floss can’t remove it, don’t use any metal or sharp tools to try to free it. Instead, it’s time to call your emergency dentist. They’ll provide the quick care you need.
