Menopause occurs in most women when they’re in their 40s or 50s and causes them to see a decline in reproductive hormones. Some signs that you’re starting to go through menopause are not menstruating for a whole year or hot flashes. Menopause is a normal part of getting older, but you may wonder if it can prevent you from undergoing certain dental procedures. For example, can you get dental implants if you’re post-menopausal? Read on to find out.
Oral Health and Menopause
When going through menopause, women can expect a lot of changes to occur within their bodies. Some of these changes have to do with their oral health, such as developing dry mouth. This creates an environment in the mouth that’s ideal for oral bacteria to flourish. Some of these bacteria are harmless, but some can attack your teeth and gums, which may result in cavities, mouth sores, and gum disease.
Menopause Factors That Can Affect Your Dental Implant Eligibility
There are two oral health issues in particular, that may impact the dental implant eligibility of someone going through menopause or who is postmenopausal. Those two things are:
- Gum disease – Dry mouth raises your risk of developing gum disease, but it’s mainly caused by improper oral hygiene. If you don’t brush and floss twice per day, this can allow bacteria to attack the gums, which may eventually lead to an infection. If it progresses far enough, the infection can damage the jawbone or cause additional tooth loss.
- Jawbone density – Gum disease can damage the jawbone, but so can a drop in estrogen levels, which is common during menopause. This is because estrogen plays an important part in keeping bones healthy. Having low levels of estrogen is linked to an increased risk of a condition characterized by reduced bone density and strength called osteoporosis. Severe osteoporosis can cause jawbone deterioration to the point where it can’t adequately support dental implants.
Can Postmenopausal Women Get Dental Implants?
So, can you get dental implants after going through menopause? There are some risks to consider, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to successfully have implants placed. Women who are postmenopausal are often at a higher risk of dental implant failure than others, but your dentist can take precautions to prevent this. Also, if you currently have osteoporosis or might develop it later on, work with your primary care provider to lower your risk of encountering these issues.
Dental implant failure is fortunately not very common. With some help from your dentist and primary care provider and by being proactive, you can prevent issues from developing so your implants will heal properly and give you a healthy, full smile you love!
